Q: WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREPARE FOR OUR FIRST APPOINTMENT?
A: To make the best use of our time together, please complete the paperwork for new clients ahead of time, found on the "Forms" page of the New Client Information, and make a list of any questions you may have so we can make sure to address them during our session. Then take a breath and relax!
Q: WHAT HAPPENS AT OUR FIRST APPOINTMENT?
A: Our first session is an opportunity for us to meet each other, size each other up, and gather information. I usually schedule a longer time (60 minutes) to allow for ample time. My goal will be to get to know you and to hear your story. I will be asking you some questions (for example, why are you seeking counseling at this time? What are you hoping to change or accomplish through counseling?) as well as answering whatever questions you may have. Your job will be to tell your story as openly as you can and to decide if I'm a good fit for you. We'll finish by discussing whether or not we want to work together, and if so, how and when.
Q: WHAT IF YOU ARE NOT A GOOD FIT FOR ME?
A: "Fit" is really important, and not every counselor-client combination is right. If we're not a good fit, I won't take it personally, and I'll do everything I can to help you find a counselor who's a better match for you.
Q: WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE?
A: I'm not the stereotypical therapist you see in the movies. I am warm, relatable, approachable, and non-judgmental. (I am also human, I make mistakes, and I have a sense of humor.) I will take time to understand where you have been, what has and hasn't worked for you in the past, and how those things affect you now. I believe that your history is important only to the extent that it continues to impact your wellbeing today. Ultimately, my clinical practice is focused on possibilities: for healing, for growth, for change, for learning, for insight, and for understanding.
Q: WHAT HAPPENS AT FUTURE APPOINTMENTS?
A: After the first appointment, we will both have a better understanding of what path to follow for your greatest growth and healing, so we will begin to have more focused conversations specifically addressing those areas of most importance to you. I encourage clients to learn all they can about the areas that we are working on. Sometimes I will recommend books, films or articles to support you in your learning.
Q: HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TO SEE YOU?
A: The answer is different for every client, so we'll decide together what makes sense for you. We may meet every week, every other week, or once a month. And, we may meet for a few months, a full year, or longer, depending upon your needs. Some clients even schedule "tune-ups" once a year just to stay focused on their progress.
Q: HOW DO I GET STARTED?
A: The best way to get started is to email me to let me know you are interested in scheduling an appointment. I will then give you access to my appointment calendar (my online portal) where you can request an initial appointment time that is most convenient for you. Be aware that I am sometimes booked a couple of weeks in advance. Also, please be aware that I update my online schedule at the end of each day. Sometimes an appointment time shows up as available on the schedule but may have been filled that day with an existing client, and I haven't had the opportunity to update the online schedule yet. So, make sure to indicate a second or third choice of times for our appointment. You may also email me with any questions you may have before scheduling an appointment. (Please be aware that emails are not secure forms of communication, so make sure to not bring up any information that might compromise your confidentiality.) I look forward to working with you!
